`A WEEKEND OF DRIVING THROUGH SOME OF THE COUNTRY`S MOST SCENIC ROUTES!` 2009 Hotrods & Hills 2009 In only three short years the Hotrods & Hills has established itself as a must-do for many English rodders, particularly those of us based in the north of the country. For a start it’s set in the fantastic and world-famous Lake District, 840 square miles of picturesque lakes, mountains, and quite simply the very best scenery in the UK. Then there’s the excellent campsite, nestling on the shores of Ullswater, and with on-site toilets, shower block, well stocked shop and even a chip shop. But most of all for many of us, is the fact that this is a driving rather than static event. This year organiser Craig Dixon surpassed himself with the Saturday route, a 90-mile jaunt that took us down into Bowness for a leisurely lunch stop, before heading back up north through Ambleside (60 hotrods through the tiny stone-built town gave residents and tourists plenty to stop/gawp/wave at), then on to Keswick, and the addition of an optional ‘hard loop’ of 28 miles, taking in the notorious Honister Pass. For anyone who hadn’t travelled the Lake District before, this was like something from another planet, a seemingly endless climb, reaching 1 in 4 in parts, up the steep-sided valley, with tumbling waterfalls and roadside boulders left over from the Ice Age, many of them twice the size of your car. You simply don’t get a better cruise than this anywhere in Great Britain. Apart from the fun of driving about in a gang, part of Craig’s intention for the event is to showcase rodding to the wider public, so the lunch-stop on the Glebe let ordinary folk see we’re not all road-burning idiots (er…!), while at the same time raising over £350 for the Great North Air Ambulance. Along with the Saturday night party and the already traditional three sets by top band The Cats, and the Sunday morning ‘Hangover Cruise’ to the Hartside Café, way up on top of the Pennines, with it’s stunning views of the Scottish coast way in the distance, it’s simply a superb event all round.
